“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has"
~ Margaret Mead
In 2014, as a first-year Uni student, Artist Against Poverty's Founder Aleesha was faced with a high-quality “problem” that many of us are fortunate enough to have at that age.
Big dreams, a world of conflicting opportunities, and a feeling that she wanted to do more. Something outside of her career plans, studies, and all the other 18-year old “stuff”.
Part of Aleesha’s “more” had been born a few years earlier. On a trip to India, she bore witness to one of the most complex human problems around.
The problem of extreme global poverty.
But from her home town in Perth, WA and with the
means of a Uni student, she couldn’t make sense of where to go, or how to join that fight, in a meaningful way.
So, she created one.
Armed with frustration, youthful gusto, and a strong suspicion that artists might just be the right type of makers and creators to join forces with on her mission to help end global poverty,
a little organisation was born:
Artists Against Poverty*
*known affectionately as LOVE Foundation for 5 years"
With our creative approach to fighting global poverty in place, we are now focused on strengthening and giving love to all the incredible parts of the approach.
Binding, supporting and growing our team of young change-makers, empowering them to learn and contribute more.
Finding more ways to support, work with and shine a light on emerging artists in our local Perth hub.
Learning from and working with our incredible project partner Opportunity International Australia to reach some of Indonesia’s most remote communities with the power of microfinance.
Raising more funds to give to these communities, with a focus on the women, and the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty for their families.
Understanding the needs and connecting with these women, some of the savviest business women you will ever meet, who we do all this work for.
